Two energy developers announced a plan to increase green hydrogen capacity to help decarbonize the Bayonne Energy Center in New Jersey. The 644 MW, natural-gas fired peaking plant sends power to New York City via a sub-Hudson cable.

The developers, NovoHydrogen and TigerGenCo (TGC), said Ohmium International would provide PEM electrolyzers for the project.

Bayonne Energy Center was originally built as a joint venture between Hess Corporation and ArcLight Capital Partners. 

The plant came online in 2012 and connects to the grid via 6.5-mile, 345-kV submarine transmission line under the New York Bay to Brooklyn. In 2012, ABB completed what it called the world’s first cross-linked polyethylene cable system linked the power plant to a substation.

In 2016, an expansion project began at the plant which increased its capacity from 512 MW to 644 MW.

Electrolysis is a promising option for carbon-free hydrogen production. The process uses electricity from renewable or nuclear resources to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Different electrolyzers function in different ways, mainly due to the different type of electrolyte material involved and the ionic species it conducts.

In a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, the electrolyte is a solid specialty plastic material.
